The Lighthouse - Masterpost zur Promo-Tour

Ein bisschen fühlt es sich so an wie in den Jahren 2009-2012... Immer wenn die Twilight-Filme vorm weltweiten Kinostart standen, ging es in die heiße Phase der Promo-Tour. Jeden Tag wurden wir mit gefühlt tausend neuen Interviews, Videos, Fotos, und so weiter überladen.. Paradisische Zustände für uns Fans, aber auch sehr, sehr anstrengend 😄 Natürlich ist Twilight was das angeht ziemlich unerreichbar, aber jetzt gerade mit "The Lighthouse" bei Rob und "3 Engel für Charlie" und "Seberg" bei Kristen, kommt doch mal wieder etwas Schwung in die Bude :)

Mit Uni-, Arbeits- und Freizeitsverpflichtungen bleibt am Ende des Tages allerdings kaum noch Zeit, sich all das Material anzuschauen geschweige denn Zeit für lange Blogposts. Aber so Masterposts, die zwar nie aktuell, aber immerhin (meine) Highlights zeigen, mache ich immer noch gerne. Hier also die besten Fotos und Interviews von Rob, die sich lohnen anzuschauen 😎


Variety's Actors on Actors

Ich denke jede*r von euch ist in den letzten Jahren schonmal über solch ein Video gestoßen. Variety lädt jährlich mehrere Schauspieler*innen ein, die in diesem Jahr mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit eine Rolle in der Award-Season spielen werden, und anstatt da irgendeinen fancy Interviewer hinzusetzen, paaren sie einfach immer zwei Schauspieler*innen miteinander, die sich dann gegenseitig interviewen können. Total einfaches Konzept, welches immer aufgeht. Die Paarungen sind auch immer total interessant und random, so das es auch zu sehr interessanten Gesprächen kommt und eben nicht einfach nur zwei Schauspieler*innen aus demselben Film zu sehen sind, sondern das total durchmischt wird.

Schon vor 2 Jahren hat Rob daran teilgenommen, damals für "Good Time" und zusammen mit Jamie Bell. (Video-Link) Dieses Jahr durfte Rob Jennifer Lopez interviewen bzw. sie ihn. Und es war großartig! Ich glaube, JLo war gar nicht so bewusst, dass Rob bei Interviews immer ziemlich seltsame Sachen erzählt und seinen Gedanken freien Lauf lässt ^^ Rob hatte auch sichtlich viel Spaß & nach 30 Minuten will man eigentlich noch viel viel mehr von den beiden sehen.

Fun Fact: "The Lighthouse" und Jennifer Lopez' Film "The Hustler" starten beide nächste Woche im Kino, 28. November. 🎥



Late Night with Seth Meyers

Natürlich dürfen auch Fernsehauftritte nicht fehlen.. Da Rob aber derzeit noch den Christopher Nolan Film 'Tenet' dreht, beschränkte sich das auf einen einzigen, und zwar bei Seth Meyers. Ich find diese 5-Minuten Auftritte in amerikanischen Fernsehsendern eh immer sinnlos, denn das Gespräch beläuft sich eigentlich nur auf

"Hi Robert. Nice to have you here, Welcome to..XY"
"Thank you."
"You have a new movie XY coming out, what was it like?"
"Great fun! It was so nice to work with XY."
"The film looks great, Thank you so much for visiting us, bye."

Kann man sich halt auch sparen ^^ Aber Seth Meyer ist noch einer der lustigeren, deshalb ist das 7(!)minütige Video auch ganz nett. Rob erzählt, dass er in Interviews immer irgendwelchen Müll erzählt, und das dann oft in der Presse ziemlich die Runde macht. hahahhahaha, ich hoffe aber, das hört nie auf!




HFPA Conversation

An alle Freunde des Podcasts: Da hamm wa was für euch! Rob war zu Gast bei der Hollywood Foreign Press Association (die die Golden Globes austragen) und sprach mit einer Journalistin über The Lighthouse, aber eigentlich über seine komplette Filmkarriere. Ehrlich gesagt ist die Interviewerin ziemlich schlecht und stellt so 0815-Fragen, die ALLE mit "what was that like?" enden, aber charmant wie Rob ist, ist er davon nicht so genervt wie ich (oder er überspielt es sehr gut, Schauspielern kann er ja😁) Er hat seine Schauspielkarriere in einer kleinen Theatergruppe in London übrigens nur auf Empfehlung seines Vaters begonnen, der zu ihm meinte, da gibt es viele hübsche Mädels. Hahahahahaha, sounds just like Rob ;)

Directors fawn over him. Girls scream for him. But Robert Pattinson can do without the A-list treatment – at least judging by the shoot for his new film, The Rover, a post-apocalyptic thriller he is starring in alongside Guy Pearce.

Shot in the Australian desert, there were no 30ft trailers and no five-star catering. ‘I was quite content to live off bread and barbecue sauce for two and a half months,’ he says. No, this wasn’t a new form of wacky diet, Pattinson just didn’t want food poisoning.

‘There were so many flies there… and I just didn’t want to eat fly s***.’ 

Thankfully, R-Patz has lived to tell the tale. Today we meet in the rather more salubrious surroundings of a posh London hotel. Dressed in denim, with stubble sprouting across his chin, he’s come equipped with sunglasses and a baseball cap, the two essential tools for evading prying eyes.

The previous day he promoted The Rover at London’s BFI Southbank. ‘90 per cent of the people outside were autograph sellers,’ he says. ‘I’m like: “You know these things aren’t worth anything.” I’ve signed so many.’ 

It’s a typically modest answer from Barnes-born Pattinson, whose career was launched playing Edward Cullen in Twilight but who seems uncomfortable with the fame it brought. The 28-year-old knows how much the vampire saga has overshadowed him.

‘People who’ve only seen Twilight… I don’t know what they think I am,’ he sighs. What he wants is credibility.

‘Rob fights to be seen as an actor rather than a movie star,’ said director Anton Corbijn when he worked with him on forthcoming film Life. ‘He is really trying to prove his worth.’

It’s why Pattinson took on The Rover, in which he plays Rey, a survivor in a world ten years on from a global economic collapse.

‘I’ve never worked so hard for an audition,’ he says of walking into the audition room ‘sort of in character’, even dressed for the part. ‘I was really obsessed with it.’ 

You can see why: Pattinson revelled in the isolation of shooting in the Outback. Ask him what he did for kicks on a Saturday night and all it took was a coin and a car. ‘You just put your foot down, go up to the next road, toss a coin and make a decision on where to go… I ended up in the middle of nowhere.’ 

That must be an appealing prospect when you’re used to being pursued by an army of fans and photographers. Pattinson has seemingly emerged unscathed, though, attributing it to having a good set of friends from his youth.

‘When your social life revolves around people you meet after you get famous, it gets a bit weird,’ he says. ‘Also, I’ve managed my life a bit better in the past few years.’ 

Moving out of the house he shared with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart helped (they first split in 2012, after she cheated on him with director Rupert Sanders).

‘I had paparazzi outside my house every single day and it would drive me insane. It took me such a long time to realise: “This is driving you crazy, you really need to stop doing this.”’ 

Filming in exotic locations that take him out of the public eye looks to be part of Pattinson’s plan. He’s just played TE Lawrence – aka Lawrence of Arabia – in Queen Of The Desert with Nicole Kidman, which took him to Morocco.

Next he’s off to Colombia for The Lost City Of Z, starring as the assistant to famed British explorer Percy Fawcett, played by Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch. ‘It’s going to be an impossible shoot,’ he says. Well, it will be if the fans of these two make it out to the jungle.

British actor and Hollywood heart-throb Robert Pattinson says he will have no style qualms about wearing a hat with corks on it next time he works in Australia.

The Twilight actor joined co-star Guy Pearce at the BFI on London’s Southbank at a special screening of new film The Rover, which was shot in the Australian Outback.

Directed by David Michod, The Rover is set in a dystopian world 10 years after a global economic collapse. Pattinson and Pearce play two down-and-outs thrown together in the fight for survival.

Pattinson said: “It was really in the middle of nowhere – it wasn’t even like Ayer’s Rock, touristy Outback. There’s nothing at all.

“I don’t even know what people were doing out there, I think it was opal mining or something.

“It’s not really something you can find good advice on.

“I realised the hats Australian people wear with the corks on... I thought that was just for the look, but it’s actually to keep away flies and it worked very well.”

But native Australian Pearce insisted he felt at home there.

“It was fine for me, I love it,” he said. “The heat, all the things that are supposedly difficult – the isolation, the heat and the flies and all that sort of stuff – to me it all adds to the unique nature of being out there.”

And just like their characters the two actors admit they bonded while making the film.

Pearce laughed: “Yeah, we formed a bond.”

When this photo was taken, Robert Pattinson was skeptical that he’d ever become someone. He played music and acted too, but after his supporting role in Harry Potter, he hadn’t gotten any roles for years. Then there was a casting, and Kristen Stewart was so hung up on this dreamy-eyed British boy, that the rest of his story couldn’t be told until Twilight. Then came Bel Ami with Uma Thurman, Water For Elephants with Reese Witherspoon, Remember Me with Pierce Brosnan, then there were three movies, starring Robert Pattinson himself, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Anikó Návai: This is your second time in Cannes…

Robert Pattinson: Third actually.

AN: So now you’re getting an honorary citizenship here, in Cannes. How is Cannes for you?

RP: I love Cannes. Probably because when I came here with Cosmopolis I had such a great experience. Every movie I do I wish would end up here. I think this is what I like about cinema. Every movie is not just a movie, it’s not just entertainment, it’s having an experience and you come out of it, you’ll feel different about life and about cinema as well. And I think this is the only festival out there, that is mainly about the art of film that every other festival doesn’t really showcase.

AN: Is it easier or is it more difficult, life after Twilight?

RP: Uhm, I don’t know. It’s kind of easier to not have to basically do a movie. I was, like, constantly working on Twilight, so whenever I had a gap in between the two Twilight movies, I had to fit something else in, and I had no time to prepare for it and stuff. And now I kind of have that time to really decide what you wanna do and it does make things a little bit easier.

AN: And the call comes in and David Michod said that he wanted you to do The Rover with Guy Pierce who didn’t know you and you didn’t know them, and he’s kind of afraid and other actors want this role too. How do you deal with this?

RP: I mean, I knew.. I hate auditioning. I mean I may have done 3 auditions since Twilight, because I’ve always been so bad at it.

AN: What do you mean bad?

RP: I get so much anxiety, I just can’t.. I hated it and I was almost about to quit entirely before Twilight, I hated auditioning so much. But then I read the script for The Rover, watched Animal Kingdom and I met David before and I just thought it would be a such great film and I really wanted to be a part, not only because of David, but the whole crew. And I really really really wanted to be in it. I honestly haven’t worked for anything this hard in my entire career.

AN: What did you have to do?

RP: I mean literally I had a week where I was waiting and I was just constantly living the part, I haven’t thought about something so much. I mean I was dreaming about it and I just wake up and worked for 12 hours a day, every single day for a week. And for like two scenes, but I really fought for it.

AN: Rob, I think you are the one from the Twilight group, that really makes smart choices. Who’s your support group who kind of helps you shape your career?

RP: I have great agents and managers but it took me a little while to realize to just work with the best directors in the world. That’s the only decision for me. It doesn’t matter what is the script, it’s just do it. I just only worked with Werner Herzog, it’s just a small part and I had absolutely no idea how to play at all but they offered it to just do it and something will happen, I just.. you’re not gonna be bad in it.. or I might be, but the likelyhood is, even if it is not that good really, all experience in a way and I think it’s all I want out of cinema.

David Cronenberg gave two roles to Rob so far. Two years ago, in Cosmopolis and this year in Maps To The Stars that both got them to the Cannes Film Festival.

AN: So we did The Rover in Cannes, this is gonna be about Rob.

RP: Oh my god.

AN: What is the biggest misconception about you, you think?

RP: I don’t know. I mean, I contradict myself a lot, so I don’t really know of anything particularly misconception. I always find odd how often people say I’m brooding, cause that’s one thing I’m kind of not really at all. And it happens quite a lot. But I mean, I guess I change quite often, so there’s not really much that’s a misconception.

AN: I would’ve said that “I’m famous and rich that I’m maybe spoiled”, that kind of thing.

RP: Yeah I kinda get surprised quite often when people joke “you’re so different from how you supposed to be” but I just don’t think about it. I often forget how people think they know me just from my films or interviews or something.

AN: And tabloids.

RP: Yeah. And you don’t realize that people actually know what your energy is at all. That can surprise me actually because I’ve already done so many interviews and it feels people they kind of know me unless they do. And they don’t.

AN: David Cronenberg knows you better than a lot of people and he told me that you are surprisingly one of the few who know about film a lot. So how many films do you watch a day? What is your habit?

RP: I don’t really have periods. Recently I’ve been watching tons but with kind of new films I only watch them on planes. I haven’t been to the movies since The Master.

AN: Right, you can’t go to the movies.

RP: I mean, I would, yeah, I don’t know. It’s been hard to concentrate on a movie with everything that has been going on. But yeah recently I’m watching a lot of movies.

AN: Also, you changed homes. You went from a big big house to a decent Rob Pattinson place.

RP: Well, in process, I keep moving, I feel homeless. I was working in Toronto and went to London for two months and worked in Toronto for six months, so now I’m trying to find myself a new spot.

AN: What would be the ideal home for you? What would it look like?

RP: I don’t know actually, the last time I bought that house, I just kind of fell in love with the house. It was just so insanely beautiful but I realized it was so nice that it didn’t feel like home, I could ever really touch it, so now I am trying to find a place that is a bit worn down so I can have my personal touches on it.

AN: Rob, in this interview we talked a lot about you and The Rover, and your fans would love to know one thing about you, from you.

RP: God, I have no idea.

AN: What you really want to share …

RP: I have absolutely no idea. I mean, most of time time I’m trying to hide things from everyone. Hiding more than revealing. I kind of struggle to not reveal too much.

AN: That you’re gonna be directing next, acting next, you’re gonna do music next or where you’re going on vacation next…

RP: I’m doing a movie with Olivier Assayas in October that I’ve been reading a lot for. It’s quiet a lot of prep even though it’s like ages away. I’m trying to change my physicality for it. Also, I’m gonna do a bit of music in New York next week and it’s always a little tiny things.. I mean for music I feel like I need much more concentration to do it.

AN: I got you something to read on the plane. It’s a Hungarian book called Utas és holdvilág (Journey by Moonlight), translated into 40 languages and it would make an awesome read and an awesome movie that you may direct someday.

RP: Is it a new book?

AN: No.

RP: Nice. I’ll read this soon. Thanks a lot.

When the franchise that made you famous has made over $1.3 billion at the box office, you’d probably never lower yourself to audition for a role again, right?

Not Robert Pattinson.

To win over Animal Kingdom writer/director David Michôd, RPatz threw any Twilight swagger out the window. “I didn’t know anything about him,” Michôd told us Thursday night at The Rover‘s L.A. premiere. (He said this with a straight face.) “I hadn’t seen any of the Twilight films.”

Maybe it’s a nod to his former vampire alter ego, but Robert Pattinson wants blood.

“I was having a dream the other night about a Chicago steak,” the actor said Tuesday. “I had one on the first ‘Twilight’ tour, and certain things just stick in your mind. Maybe it’s my inner vampire coming out again.”

With a trademark laugh, Pattinson knows he will get his wish. He will film the gangster movie “Idol’s Eye” with Robert De Niro in Chicago in October. “I love Chicago,” he says. “It’s one of those cities where I can walk around and people are really kind. They respect that there are times I need a little silence.”

He also found that silence working in the Australian Outback for his new movie “The Rover” (opening Friday), where Pattinson plays Ray, a young man on a mission to survive a wild desert trip and killing spree with another drifter played by Guy Pierce.

Q. What was it like filming in the Outback?
A: I really love the desert because you can be alone, which is very nice. I could just wander off a bit and no one cared because there wasn’t a single soul for thousands of miles. Most of the towns where we filmed had one street. The other cool thing is that when I was mobbed, it was by a bunch of kangaroos who lived there or the wild camels. I respect these people who are out there, too, living off the grid. It was perfect for me to be a bit off the grid where I didn’t have to look over my shoulder. No one was taking a picture of me doing something stupid.

In The Rover’s bleak universe, there is virtually no backstory — illustrative of a world in which nothing really matters — and we know little about Robert Pattinson’s Rey other than that he and his older brother (Scoot McNairy) are in a small band of thugs who were violently thwarted during a criminal act we don’t see. An injured Rey has been abandoned for expedience’s sake, which is how he becomes a hostage to Eric (Guy Pearce), whose car has been stolen by Rey’s former friends. (Eric really wants that car back, for a reason that is revealed only in the movie’s final moments.) As Rey, Pattinson plays a “half-wit,” as Eric calls him, a far cry from Twilight’s Edward Cullen, the emo vampire who served as a tweenage fantasy.

LOS ANGELES—“Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful/ Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful/ Now do the pretty girl rock, rock, rock.” Robert Pattinson singing along to Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock” playing on the radio in his car, before a violent moment, is a rare humorous relief in David Michod’s “The Rover.” It prompted a question in a recent interview at LA’s Four Seasons on whether Robert plans to record an album anytime soon.

“I’m always trying to figure out how… but it’s quite difficult,” replied the actor, looking boyish with his short haircut, dark pants, black jacket over a brown shirt and white tee. Laughing, the 28-year-old Robert said, “I want to do it before I’m 30 because I think it gets slightly embarrassing after [that].”

Robert revealed that, originally, he was to sing along to The Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha.” (That would have been a hoot, too.) “But David e-mailed me that Keri Hilson song,” he said. “I thought it was a new song. I didn’t realize it had like 500 million (actually 48 million plus) views on YouTube.”

He explained, “Initially, David was saying that he wanted me to sing it like it was my favorite song—loudly in the car. Luckily, it didn’t end up that way. That would have been a bit too random. But the song is perfect in the movie.”
